Former Attorney General William Barr recalled how Donald Trump screamed at him and took his instant resignation after he pulled the plug on the former president’s election lies.
NBC previewed an interview Barr gave to Lester Holt as he prepares his upcoming memoir, One Damn Thing After Another. The book is reportedly full of details from Barr on how he torpedoed Trump’s false election claims, blamed him for the storming of the U.S. Capitol, and suggests the Republican Party move on without the ex-president.
“I told him that all this stuff was bullsh*t about election fraud,” Barr told Holt. “And, you know, it was wrong to be shoveling it out the way his team was. And he started asking me about different theories. And I had the answers. I was able to tell him, ‘This is wrong because of this.’”
Barr recalled how Trump was “obviously getting very angry about this,” and he said, “I’m perfectly happy to tend to my resignation.” At that moment, according to Barr, Trump pounded the desk and said “ACCEPTED!”
“And then boom! He slapped it again,” Barr said before quoting Trump. “‘Accepted! Go home! Don’t go back to your office! Go home, you’re done.’”
