Anne Hathaway Returns For ‘Princess Diaries 3’

Anne Hathaway is returning for Princess Diaries 3.

The actress confirmed the news on Instagram hours after Deadline exclusively reported that director Adele Lim had boarded the threequel.

In the video she posted, Hathaway counted to three with cuts of her younger self as Mia Thermopolis and Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi both saying “Shut up!”

Lim, who wrote Disney’s animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and made her directorial debut with Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Joy Ride (2023) starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu. Other credits for Lim include being a writer producer on One Tree Hill and Lethal Weapon as well as co-showrunning Star-Crossed. She also wrote the Jon Chu-directed rom com Crazy Rich Asians based on the book by Kevin Kwan.

Debra Martin Chase will produce Princess Diaries 3. EPs include Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.

The first Princess Diaries film arrived in 2001, and Hathaway’s role as teen Mia Thermopolis, who learns she is a princess, was a breakthrough for her career. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came along in 2004 just after Hathaway appeared in the film adaptation of Ella Enchanted the same year.

Other original cast have not yet been confirmed to return to the third installment. Julie Andrews has previously said she’s not sure where she would fit into a threequel. Garry Marshall directed the first and second films. Meg Cabot and Gina Wendkos wrote the first film’s script, and Shonda Rhimes joined the pair for the second film.
