‘Superman & Lois’ Renewed for Season 2 at The CW

To no surprise, The CW is keeping Superman and Lois Lane around.

The younger-skewing broadcast network has handed out a speedy season two renewal for rookie DC Comics drama Superman & Lois. The pickup arrives after the Greg Berlanti-produced drama aired only one episode. The second installment debuts Tuesday night.

“The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman & Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment,” CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said in announcing the renewal Tuesday “We are thrilled to now have two brand-new bona fide hits in Superman & Lois and Walker, both of which have been renewed for next season along with 11 other of our shows, further positioning us for continued strength and stability for next season.”

Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, was picked up straight-to-series at The CW. The network last year also went straight to series on Walker as it looked to get a jump on scripts ahead of the standoff between writers and their agents. While Pedowitz is a firm believer in the pilot process, the network did go straight to series this year on an update of The 4400 as The CW looks to get an early jump on production during the pandemic.

The 90-minute opener (which included a half-hour special that followed the premiere) drew 1.75 million viewers and a 0.37 rating among adults 18-49. It marked the largest same-day audience for any of The CW’s DC Comics fare since the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover in December 2019. The CW says it also delivered the largest day-one streaming audience for a new series in its history. Delayed viewing saw the series debut grow to 2.7 million total viewers.
