Willie Nelson has cooked up a birthday present for himself: a new studio album.

“Last Man Standing” is scheduled for release on April 27, two days before the revered country music singer and songwriter turns 85.

Announced Friday, the collection includes 11 new songs Nelson has written with longtime songwriting collaborator and producer Buddy Cannon. It’ll be the follow-up to last year’s “God’s Problem Child,” for which Nelson and Cannon also worked together, and which premiered at No. 1 on Billboard’s country album chart.

“Willie’s a jazz singer and jazz player,” Cannon said in a statement. “He’s an improvisational musician. It’s different every time.”

Cannon’s approach to recording Nelson’s signature, idiosyncratic delivery of the songs he sings? “Get a good take and go with it,” Cannon said.
