The world’s most irreverent superhero — aka Deadpool, aka Ryan Reynolds — could soon be the newest Christmas tradition.

If you thought Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Aquaman would be enough to quench your superhero appetite this December, you might want to reconsider. We can’t forget that the Merc With a Mouth is returning to the big screen, this time with a PG-13 cut of this summer’s Deadpool 2, starring Reynolds and directed by David Leitch. The writers of the movie, Rhett Reeseand Paul Wernick. recently spoke to Slashfilm, and revealed that new scenes were filmed for the not-quite-as-adult cut.

It was announced at the end of September that a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 will screen in theaters. For those wondering why this is happening, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick told CinemaBlend’s own Eric Eisenberg that they wanted the sequel to be accessible to a wider demographic, while also throwing in some new elements to entertain the older crowd who already watched Deadpool 2.

Deadpool already stands out from other comic book protagonists thanks to his habit of breaking the fourth wall, but because 20th Century Fox was ok with the character’s movies entering the R-rated realm (which the studio also later approved for Logan), that further helped Deadpool and Deadpool 2 distinguish themselves from other superhero movies, most of which are rated PG-13.

“We definitely shot new stuff,” Wernick said. “And recently too. After Deadpool 2 came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio. They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’ We were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we’re super excited about it.”

The writers did stress that even with the PG-13 rating, this is not just a “kiddie version” of Deadpool, and adults can still enjoy it even after seeing the R-rated cut. “I think it’s not only going to appeal to kids but also to people who love Deadpool,” Wernick said. “I think it’s subversive enough and fun and creative and something that only Deadpool could do. So, I think it’s going to be a real joy not only [to] a whole new audience but also an audience that has seen and loved the Deadpool movies.”

The PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 hits theaters on December 21, although it’s unclear how long it will be shown on the silver screen. If you’d rather watch the original R-rated version, it’s available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
