‘The Conners’ Has Officially Started Production

The cast and executive producers of ABC’s new comedy series “The Conners” reunited for the official start of production in Burbank, California.

On Friday, ABC announced that production is underway on the Roseanne spin-off series, which is slated to debut on October 16.

“The Conners,” a spinoff of the groundbreaking family comedy “Roseanne,” has been greenlit to series with an order of 10 episodes for fall 2018. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.

The network has yet to address how the show will handle Roseanne’s departure, but on Monday, Goodman revealed (most likely accidentally) that his on-screen wife will be killed off. “It’s an unknown,” Goodman told The Sunday Times about how his character will be different in The Conners. “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”

In May, the Roseanne reboot was cancelled after the actress tweeted a racist message about Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama aide. Within a few days, rumors had spread that ABC was discussing how to continue the show without its star, and the network opted to pursue a series about the family itself. While Roseanne won’t appear in the series, her presence will loom large in the spin-off, so don’t expect her to go away any time soon. Lucky us.

In the first picture from The Conners’ set, cast members John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Jayden Ray Michael Fishman, Emma Kenney, Lecy Goranson, and Ames McNamara sit at their first table read without disgraced star Roseanne Barr.

Sara Gilbert, who is also executive producing, Jayden Rey, Michael Fishman, Ames McNamara, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, and Emma Kenney are seen around the Conner family table reading lines from the upcoming series.

“The Conners” premieres TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16 (8:00 – 8:31 p.m.), on ABC.
