[nextpage]Sick of prequels, sequels, remakes, and reboots? Many of us are. Studios seem to pump out more every year. They’re safe bets, established properties everyone knows (for the most part) will do well at the box office. Original movies? Those are the risky ones… And the best ones. Here’s a look at the year 2019 in original movies, no sequels or remakes allowed.

‘Serenity’

Release date: January 25, 2019
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Strong

“I want you to take him out on your boat, and drop him in the ocean for the sharks.” The sinister plot of Serenity belies its title and we’re betting there are plenty of lies and double-crosses in this one to carry the theme. There aren’t many noirs made anymore, but this stylized murder-for-hire flick seems to have it all. Anne Hathaway looks especially dangerous in femme fatale mode. She hires her ex-hubby (McConaughey) to off her current one, but there’s more to the story, of course.[/nextpage][nextpage]

‘Cold Pursuit’

Release date: February 8, 2019
Starring:  Liam Neeson, Emmy Rossum, Laura Dern, Tom Bateman

‘Alita: Battle Angel’

Release date: February 14, 2019
Starring: Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, Eiza Gonzalez

This one’s been pushed back from 2018 and Rodriguez, best known for Desperado and his love of horror, seems an odd choice for the material, but we’re into Alita: Battle Angel. Plus, the movie is produced and co-written by James Cameron so there’s some serious talent behind this one.

Based on Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita manga, Rodriguez’s film will focus on the title heroine. Alita is a junked cyborg found in a future world by a cybermedic expert and brought back to working condition. She remembers nothing and soon embarks on a mission to rediscover her former life
