Annapurna has released a first-look image of Nicole Kidman’s crime thriller “Destroyer,” in which the actress looks very different from her usual self.
“Destroyer” received early attention thanks to Kidman’s extreme transformation for the role, revealed by paparazzi shots from the set. Now, in the picture obtained by Vanity Fair, we can see the transformation in full — Kidman has short hair, bags under her eyes and seems to be full of anger.
“We always knew that what we wanted her to look like was a real middle-aged woman with a past that she wears on her face,” director Karyn Kusama told Vanity Fair. “With sun damage and sleep deprivation and stress and rage, just in her whole physical body.”
Destroyer follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Kidman, who just came off an Emmy win for her acting and producing on the HBO hit Big Little Lies, Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Sebastian Stan (Avengers: Infinity War), Toby Kebbell (War for the Planet of the Apes), Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire) and Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys). Destroyer is being helmed by Karyn Kusama, whose previous works include Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation and a segment on the 2017 horror anthology XX.
Destroyer will be making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September followed by a theatrical release on December 25.
