Drew Barrymore loves Jake Gyllenhaal, OK?
The actress professed as much with a hand-written sign which she proudly marched down the red carpet at Thursday evening’s season 2 premiere of her Netflix zombie comedy, Santa Clarita Diet. (Not quite the silent red carpet statements we’ve been used to seeing the awards season, but sure, Drew, do you.)
But before the internet gets to shipping the couple and picking the perfect portmanteau (they’re terrible anyway — Drake? Jew? — no.), you should know that Barrymore’s confession was not so much a plea for a date but rather an apology for a statement she made about her Donnie Darko co-star on TV.
During an appearance alongside John Boyega on James Corden’s The Late Late Show, Barrymore called the actor the least talented among three actors she’s worked with throughout her career. The admission was made during the game, “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts,” in which players are required to either answer a controversial question (usually regarding their feelings about other people) or eat something disgusting, like bird saliva or a Spam smoothie.
When Barrymore was presented with the option of ranking past male co-stars — including Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Adam Sandler (50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, Blended) and Hugh Grant (Music and Lyrics) — by talent or eating a turkey testicle, she caved. However, rather than list the actors in descending order, Barrymore blurted, “Jake Gyllenhaal, so I don’t have to eat a turkey’s ball.”
When Corden pointed out that she wasn’t being asked to throw one of them under the bus, Barrymore said, “When I run into him next time, I’ll be like, ‘Dude, it was like selling you down the river or eating turkey’s balls.'” She continued in a fluster, “And by the way, I don’t even care if he hates me,” before coming up with a final ranking: “I’ll say, Adam, Hugh, Jake.”
