Matthew McConaughey is considering a run for the position of Governor of Texas. One of the most recognized actors of his generation,
McConaughey has graced big and small screens for over two decades with memorable roles in True Detective, Interstellar, and A Time To Kill. Last year, McConaughey released his memoir Greenlights, which uncovered numerous revelations about the actor’s life. These include McConaghey’s first gig as a hand model, the actor’s favorite roles, and his struggle with experiencing sexual abuse as a teenager.
Since breaking into the entertainment industry, McConaughey has gone through several distinct phases of his career. Following a period of being Hollywood’s lead heartthrob in a slew of romantic comedies, McConaughey took a short break from acting. Upon his return, two years later, McConaughey proved his value as a serious actor by appearing in The Lincoln Lawyer, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club – the film that snagged him an Oscar win. A native Texan, McConaughey occasionally teaches at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. Now it appears the Oscar winner could take on a more prominent role in the Lone Star state.
Speaking on The Balanced Voice podcast, McConaughey told host Rania Mankarious that when it comes to running for Governor of Texas, it’s “a true consideration.” Revealing that he has been mulling over the next chapter of his life, McConaughey said, “I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role?” As it stands, current Texas Governor Greg Abbott is slated to run for reelection in 2022.
Of course, McConaughey has stoked the fires of political office speculation before when he mentioned in an interview on The Hugh Hewitt Show that running for Governor of Texas was not out of the realm of possibility. Renowned for his charm, soothing Texas drawl, and ruggedly handsome appearance, McConaughey continues to utilize his magnetic personality to implement positive changes in his community, including founding the Just Keep Livin Foundation.
