Kim Kardashian is looking to atone for using the word “retarded” in an Instagram video after people didn’t understand her and Jonathan Cheban‘s Halloween costume as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.

“I want to apologize for what I said in a recent video post that is inappropriate and insensitive to the special needs community,” she told Page Six in a statement. “I try to learn from my mistakes and this is one of those times. Please know that my intention is always pure, and in this case, it was a mistake. I’m sorry.”

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star sparked online outrage when she called her friends at Kendall Jenner‘s Halloween party “retarded” when they didn’t recognize the on-again, off-again couple’s 1999 VMAs outfit. She then complained about the demographic of the party being too young to understand the reference.

Kim eventually deleted the video after people on social media began slamming her for using the slur.

On Thursday, Lee himself took to Twitter to slam Cheban’s costume, tweeting, “My culture is not your costume.”

This wasn’t the first time a Kardashian family member has used the word to insult someone. Khloé Kardashian also had to apologize for using it to describe Kourtney Kardashian when she couldn’t figure out how to sync her smartphones.

“Ugh I hate that word! Why did I even say that?” Khloé later tweeted in response to a fan who called her out. “You are a million percent right and I actually greatly dislike when people use that word! I will do better! I am sorry! much love today.”
